Review and Effect of Acid Treatment on Indian Montmorillonite and Kaolin Clay

Abstract

Clay being the available resource throughout the world and being rich in alumino-silicate compounds is of great importance. This review mainly focuses on the montmorillonite and kaolin clay and includes acid treatment, clay based catalyst and zeolite from montmorillonite and kaolin clay. In this review, effect of acid treatment, Si/Al ratio and conversion of catalyst in reaction is discussed. Indian clay is treated with sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid, respectively followed by calcination. The physio-chemical characteristics of acid leached montmorillonite and kaolin clay were studied by wet process, XRF, and FTIR techniques; studies indicate that acid treatment leads to the removal of the octahedral Al3+ cations along with other impurities. Leaching of Al3+ ions increased progressively with severity of the acid treatment. Solids thus obtained by acid treatments can be used as promising adsorbents and catalyst supports.

on the structural and chemical properties of Indian Montmorillonite and Kaolin clay. The XRF and wet process studies indicated clearly the leaching and disintegration of the clay sheet upon acid treatment of different concentration. As the strength of the acid is increased, Al2O3, MgO, CaO, K2O, TiO2 contents in the acid treated material decreased progressively simultaneously increasing the SiO2 content. FTIR study of the acid treated clay shows the presence of several kinds of structural OH groups whose peak position and intensity changes with increase in acid concentration. This indicates the dehydroxylation and successive leaching of the Al ions from the octahedral layer. Thus, this method can be useful for manufacturing high silica to alumina ratio and acid active sites material from Indian Montmorillonite and Kaolin clay which can be used forcatalyst.
