Metal Matrix Composites: Materials with the best property combination
Abstract
Abstract
Metal matrix composites have been emerging out to be the most sought after materials in the field of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. The basic driving force behind their wide applications is the fusion of ductile nature of metallic constituent and strong ceramic phases. This combination would always yield a structure with good toughness and longer service life. Aluminum-Silicon Carbide (SiC/Al) is a metal matrix composite that combine the properties of Aluminum i.e., light weight and high thermal conductivity, and that of Silicon Carbide (SiC) i.e., high strength and low coefficient of thermal expansion. The major applications of this composite lies in Aircraft Technology and Electronic Engineering. The current paper critically discusses the synthesis, processing, fabrication, and post treatment of Al-SiC Metal Matrix Composites to make them suitable for desired applications.
Keywords: Metal matrix composites, Al-SiC, production techniques, treatments, applications
