Abstract

This research investigates radiation levels at refuse dump sites and laboratories within the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria environs and assesses the associated risks to human health and the environment. The study utilizes two radiation detection instruments namely the Personal Radiation Detector and the Radioisotope Identifier Device. The PRD offers real-time detection and spectroscopic analysis of gamma and neutron radiation, while the RID combines gamma and neutron radiation detection with advanced spectroscopic analysis and data logging capabilities. Radiation readings were taken at thirteen different locations within the study area. The results showed elevated radiation levels at two of the locations which were higher than the recommended limits. The identified sources of radiation at the various locations were Ag110m, Am241, Bi207, Cs134, Eu152, K40, Th232/U232 and Xe133. The study is significant as it addresses a knowledge gap in radiation mapping within the University environs and provides crucial data for detection of nuclear and other radioactive material out of regulatory control. It highlights the need for awareness among stakeholders and the implementation of appropriate radioactive waste management strategies to ensure good health of the university community as well as the security and safety of radioactive sources.
