On The Time-Domain Analysis of the Electromagnetic Transients in High-Voltage Line Towers

Abstract

This paper presents an efficient and direct method for the time-domain transient analysis of high voltage power line towers. A Mathematica-based numerical solution of the governing set of simultaneous partial differential and algebraic equations is proposed. The results of a corresponding computer code are presented and discussed. A comparison with other more sophisticated analytical time-and Laplace-domain approaches is presented. In addition to the possible use of the EMTP transients’ program, there are two main well-established approaches to the transient analysis of line towers. The first one applies numerical Laplace s-domain techniques utilizing numerical inversion. Solutions can also be obtained through the adoption of eventually existing analytical techniques for solving the equations describing the voltage and current distributions. Another option is dividing the basically non-uniform equivalent line into an appropriate number of shorter line sections. Each of the sections can be treated as an almost uniform short line. This study suggests a straightforward technique based on using the computer software Mathematica for the direct numerical solution of the derived equations. The presented approach can also handle cases involving repetitive lightning surges. Several case studies are investigated, and some representative sample results are discussed. The paper is concluded by a printout of the computer code. It generates most of the presented plots.

    Received the B.Sc. Degree (Honors) in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University, Egypt in1965, then the Dipl.-Ing. And Dr-Ing. Degrees from RWTH Aachen, Germany, in 1970 and1974. From 1974 to 1983, he was at Assiut University, Egypt. In 1983, he joined Kuwait University where he served as full professor and EE Department Chairman. He spent one-year sabbatical leave (1998) as a Visiting Professor at Cairo University. Since his retirement in 2009,Prof. Saied works as an Independent Researcher, Giza, and Cairo, Egypt. He is an IEEE Life Senior Member since 1984
