Abstract

Abstract

In the modern world of science and technology, there is current rising trend towards the augmentation of mechanical properties of composites by introducing different materials in many flexible ways to overcome the newly resurgent demands, especially in engineering practices. Many natural fibers like jute, sisal, bamboo, bagasse, hemp and banana find their application as a reinforcing component in composite materials due to their light weight, low cost, low density, biodegradability, etc. The main difficulty faced off using natural fiber to make composites is the poor compatibility that occurs due to poor bonding between the natural fiber and the matrix. Thus to improve this difficulty, several chemical treatments are performed. Several researchers have carried out their work and found out that outstanding tensile properties can be obtained by using natural fiber (sisal) as strengthening component in composite materials. This genuine review work which has been carried out is to examine the effects of the various chemical treatments of the natural fiber (sisal) on the mechanical properties of the sisal fiber reinforced composite materials. The motto behind this work is to create the lightweight and inexpensive hybrid composite material with superior mechanical properties by modifying natural (sisal) fiber with various chemical treatments. It was found that the mechanical properties like tensile, flexural, impact strength etc. have been significantly improved by carrying out chemical treatment of the sisal fiber as compared to the untreated composites.
