Assessment on the Physical Characteristics of Polymer Materials for Additive Layer Manufacturing Processes

Rohit Pandey, Hardik B. Ramani

Abstract

Polymer materials have the capacity to morph into a soft form and flow when heated, then return to their original hardness when cooled, making them excellent for heat fabrication procedures. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is a high-grade polymer with exceptional mechanical qualities and heat resistance that is commonly used in aircraft and vehicle manufacture. These polymers are mixed with other materials to create alloys, which are primarily used in the production and fabrication of high-performance engineering thermoplastics. Additive layer manufacturing technologies based on polymer composites have been widely employed in 3D printing for decades. The effect of numerous processing parameters involved in ALM procedures such as FDM of polymer-fibre composites for improved physical and mechanical properties was highlighted in the assessment of polymer materials. This paper also briefly discusses the physical features of FDM-based ALM processes and fibre composites. As a result, the research article provides a systematic study enabling researchers in the relevant engineering sector to evaluate the physical properties of fibre-reinforced polymeric composites created using ALM.
