Case Study of Multipulse Converter System for IGBT Based Inverter in Induction Melting Furnace

Harmonic mitigation is an important aspect for the smooth operation of modern power electronics converters, medical equipment, and home appliances which are generally fed by a common grid supply. In large power equipment such as induction furnaces, it becomes necessary to reduce or eliminate harmonics from the supply. In order to cater dynamic load cycle during complete melting cycles in induction furnaces, power needs to vary. This can be achieved by varying the firing angle of SCRs in converters or by varying frequency of switching devices in resonant inverters which causes significant distortion on grid side. This paper presents a case of twelve pulse converters feeding IGBT inverter based LLC resonant inverter topology for 225 kVA induction furnace application. The comparison and analysis of both the converter system is verified by PSIM tool and validated by experimental results on 225 kVA test bench. It is shown that multipulse converter effectively mitigates harmonics and is a viable solution for large power applications.
