Octagrid an Alternative Lateral Load Resisting System

Shaikh Faizan, Nitin S. Vaidkar, Arvin B. Vawhale

Abstract

The cost of the land in the rapidly developing urban cities have skyrocketed in the last few decades. Acquiring a piece of land has become very difficult for the builders and developers for different amenities and hence the concept of tall buildings has spread its roots in the urban infrastructure scenario. Tall buildings facilitate the optimum use of land and many amenities such as offices, residential apartments, shopping malls and gathering places can be accommodated in a single building. This however gives rise to a new set of problems in which are different than the low rise buildings. The problem that dominates these new problems is the lateral loads that becomes critical as the height of the building increases. These problems can be dealt with the use of different lateral load resisting systems. These systems are tried and tested at the initial design stage to give the best alternate so that the building meets the serviceability and the economy demand. The modern age finite element software facilitates the prediction of the lateral loads according to the terrain and the geographic location of the building. The lateral load resisting system of Octagrid module is compared to the conventional model in this study.
