Abstract

This study investigated seismic base shear and wind base shear for typical residential building of different story according to newly adopted BNBC 2020, which is a regional modification of ASCE 7-05. For the study we considered six building of different height and lateral load resisting system situated in high seismic and high wind zone, Chattogram, Bangladesh. For this reason, three-dimensional building model was prepared using ETABS V.18 with loading provisions prescribed in the new code. From the generated models’ seismic mass was known and validated with hand calculation of seismic mass from building configurations. The seismic base shear from the analysis of the model was then compared with seismic mass for all the six models. Similarly, wind base shear for all the models were found and presented as a ratio of projected area. The above findings are compiled to form a design chart for estimating lateral force for this zone moreover design equation is also proposed. A comparison of wind base shear and seismic base shear is also done to understand the governing lateral for this zone according to new BNBC 2020.
