Study of Shear Strength and Hardness of Resistance Spot Welding for Automotive Applications
Abstract
Resistance spot welding is the most popular process used in automotive and aerospace for joining of sheet metals of different thicknesses, shapes, and materials. There has been already much research done on the resistance spot welding. This review paper gives an overview of the performance of resistance spot welds in an automobile. For this, AWS D8.9M:2012 (Test Methods for Evaluating the resistance spot welding behaviour for automotive steel sheet materials) was considered. As per this standard, shear, tensile, cross-tension, and hardness are the properties to be valued for the performance of the weld in automobile applications. Among these properties, shear strength and hardness are considered and reviewed in particular.
