Evaluation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Characteristics on Temperature Effect in Packed Bed on the Concept of Adsorbent Comparison

Ukpaka Chukwuemeka Peter, Achadu M. Abah

Abstract

Petroleum hydrocarbon treatment in a contaminated water medium was examine using different adsorbents made of plantain stem fibre, banana stem fibre and palm oil fibre obtained in Obite community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State of Nigeria. The three different materials were processed and prepared as an adsorbent for the purpose of treatment of contaminated water medium with petroleum hydrocarbon. The comparison of the adsorbents was monitored with respect to variation in temperature and the process was demonstrated in a packed bed unit connected in series. The investigation revealed that high percentage of the petroleum hydrocarbon was removed within the temperature of 30°C to 60°C. These characteristics were achieved in all the adsorbent used for this research and with high performance with the banana stem fibre followed by plantain stem fibre and lastly the palm oil fibre. The procedure was shown in a packed bed unit connected in series, and the comparison of the adsorbents was tracked in relation to temperature variation. The performance of each adsorbent was classified good as well as the ability to withstand high temperature without changing its characteristics was well observed. This investigation has shown that the three adsorbents possess the characteristics of adsorption properties and is recommended as good material for adsorption process.
