Studies on Effect of Various Curing Methods in Glass Fibre Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete with 12 Molarity Alkaline Solutions
Abstract
Due to the increasing environmental impacts associated with ordinary Portland cement, need to develop alternative binders to make concrete, is steadily increasing. Geopolymer concrete is the result of the reaction of materials containing Alumino-silicate with concentrated alkaline solution to produce an inorganic polymer binder. Alkaline solutions used were Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Silicate. This paper presents results of an experimental study on the compressive strength, flexural strength and split tensile strength of Glass fibre reinforced Geopolymer concrete, when the proportions of Glass fibre added were varied. Molarity of the alkaline solutions used was fixed as 12 M. The experiments were conducted on low-calcium fly ash based Geopolymer concrete by adapting various curing techniques namely natural curing and heat curing. The ratio of alkaline liquid to fly ash was fixed as 0.427. For heat curing, the temperature was maintained at 100oC for 24 h in oven. Glass fibre was added to Geopolymer concrete in various proportions varying from 0.1 to 0.5% by weight of flyash. Given the fact that fly ash is considered as a waste material, the low-calcium fly ash-based Geopolymer concrete is, therefore, cheaper than the ordinary Portland cement concrete.
