Experimental Analysis of Rectangular and Circular Microstrip Patch Antenna with Superstrates
Abstract
This paper focusing on the experimental analysis of rectangular and circular microstrip patch
antennas with and without radome (superstrate). The proposed antennas were designed at
2.4GHz, using HFSS simulation software and fabricated on Arlon DiClad 880 substrate
whose dielectric constant is 2.2, loss tangent is 0.0009 and thickness of the substrate is
1.6mm. Placing different dielectric constant of the superstrates above the patch antennas
performance characteristics have been studied of both antennas on the basis of resonant
frequency, gain, bandwidth, beam width, input impedance, return loss and VSWR etc. The
effect of radome or superstrate with and without studied on both antennas and compared their
performance characteristics. When placing radome (superstrates) above the substrate, the
resonant frequency is altered and the performance decreased, return loss and VSWR are
increased. The transmission line model and cavity model analysis are used for designing of
rectangular and circular patch antennas. The experimental result observed the higher gain is
obtained for rectangular microstrip patch and higher bandwidth is obtained for circular patch
antenna using same dielectric constant at ∈r1 =2.2. The 2.4 GHz frequency range used for
wireless communications applications.
