Evaluating Current Public Transportation Management System for Baghdad City

Awss Hatim Mahmoud

Abstract

Transportation enhances the level of development and economic growth. While the transportation system affects the ease of transporting people and goods, it also has a direct impact on economic growth and land accessibility. Moreover, transportation system influences some public policies regarding environment, natural resources’ consumption, social justice, economic growth, and safety. The public transportation system in Baghdad involves buses, taxies and minibuses. Within the last decade, the existing system did not experience a sufficient development regarding the rapid growth of population, security challenges and unreasonable increased number of private cars in Baghdad. Eventually, the use of the public transportation for the common public turned out to be harder. As a result, private cars are considered the main means of transportation in Baghdad because the lines’ network suffered from incompleteness, deterioration and lack of transportation facilities. The objective of this research deals with the concept of public transportation and sustainable transportation, history of the state company for travelers and delegates transportation, current public transportation management system, preparation of the questionnaire and descriptive analysis.
