A Comparative Investigation of the Speed Regulation Capabilities of Electric Drives for Domestic and Agricultural Applications

Asok Kumar A., Bindu G. R.

Abstract

Performance enhancement of electric drives is an area of major concern in present day applications. In domestic sector and agricultural applications, conventional type of motors like Single Phase Induction Motors (SPIM) are still used, the dynamic performance and efficiency of which are poor. Replacing such motors with highly efficient Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) will improve the performance as well as conserve the energy. This paper mainly focuses on the speed regulation capabilities of SPIM and SRM, the inverter/converter topologies and the speed control aspects. The operating point in both cases is selected as per the requirement of the applications. The simulation results clearly show that SRM provides a better dynamic speed response as compared to SPIM in all such applications. This investigation assumes significance, since no such quantitative comparative study in this area has been made in any previous research work.
