Performance of Circular Model Footing Resting on Sand Bed Reinforced with Vertical Reinforcement in Dry Condition

Abstract

Soil stabilization is the process of improving the engineering properties of the soil. The good old method of stabilization is by using the chemicals stabilization, whereas the recent method of improving the strength of the soil is by using the vertical reinforced earth. In the present work sand is filled in the 250x250x375 mm MS tank by using sand raining technique at a relative density of 67%. MS circular plate of 40 mm diameter with 25mm thickness materiel is considered as surface footing. That surface footing is resting on sand bed with and without vertical reinforcement. Over the prepared sand bed surface footing is subjected to static increasing load as per plate load testing procedure. Bearing Capacity Ratio (BCR) is dependent upon spacing, length and extent of reinforcing material and based upon experimental results following combination of reinforcement is suggested for deriving substantial improvement in bearing capacity. Spacing of vertical reinforcement used should be about 1.250 times the width of footing(U/B=1.250). Improvement of BCR at 25 mm settlement on compared to unreinforced condition at optimal spacing of U/B=1.250 is 140%.
