Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Jute and Bamboo Natural Fiber Composites

Abstract


Natural fibers have become increasingly popular in recent decades. Natural fiber composites are also becoming increasingly popular in a various industries, including automobiles, furniture, packaging, construction and sports. Natural fibers have several advantages over synthetic fibers, including low cost, low density, reduced damage to processing equipment, good relative mechanical properties, renewability, and biodegradability. Natural fibers were also introduced with the goal of producing lighter composites, and they have shown a proclivity to replace conventional glass fiber reinforced polymer composites. In this paper, mechanical properties such as tensile, compressive, impact strengths, hardness and flexural strength properties are investigated for jute and bamboo natural fiber composites. The mechanical properties of composites, such as tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and hardness, have been observed to be significantly influenced by the weight of the fibres used. Due to a lack of suitable bonding between the matrix and the fibre at their contact, excess fibres in composite materials decrease the composite's mechanical properties. As a result, the load transmission to the bonding fibres is impeded. This could explain why higher bamboo and jute fibre compositions have lower impact and flexural strength values. According to the findings, the amount of bamboo fibre in composite materials boosts tensile and flexural strength.
