Experimental Study of Flexural Behavior of High Strength Concrete

SWAPNIL PRAKASH BELSARE

Abstract

Flexural test results generated on nine reinforced concrete beams to evaluate the implications of using high-strength concrete (HSC) are reported. The stress block parameters on the current IS456-2000 code are limited to concrete strength up to 55 MPa. This paper looks at the applicability of IS456-2000 stress block parameters for HSC beyond the scope of code IS456-2000. Particular emphasis has been given to the issues of maximum compressive strain, ultimate moment capacity of the beam, neutral axis depth, and deflection at the bottom center of the beam. Relevant information has been collected from the literature whenever necessary for the analysis and interpretation of test observations. Design provisions contained in the current codes of practices, particularly those in the IS 456-2000 and ACI 318-14 codes have been examined. It is shown that for a singly reinforced beam, the ultimate moment capacity is relatively insensitive to the stress block model. Test results also show that the ultimate compressive strain decreases as the compressive strength increase. Test parameters include concrete compressive strength, percentage of reinforcement, and W/C ratios.
