Seismic response analysis of adjacent rc structures considering seismic pounding effect

Yash Hemraj Gajbi, S.A. Bhalchandra

Abstract

As we know there is increase in construction of High-rise structures in developed cities. These structures are subjected to earthquake forces. Due to populated areas the buildings are constructed very closely to each other in order to utilize the entire property area. In such conditions there is possibility of occurring seismic pounding which will cause greater damage to the adjacent structures in addition to the damage caused by the earthquake. For the stated reasons, we know that seismic pounding phenomenon is not desired by any designer irrespective of the earthquake zones. In the present study; behaviour of a structure with adjacent structures of same height as well as different height of structures are considered with an initial seismic gap of 50mm with and without base isolators. Analysis is carried out to determine the minimum seismic gap in order to avoid seismic pounding. The behaviour of the structure is studied in terms of storey displacement. The present study suggests that a larger seismic gap is required to prevent seismic pounding in case of Base isolated structures than Fixed base structures
