An Overview on Sustainable Transportation Planning for Baghdad

Saad Issa Sarsam

Abstract

Sustainable transportation system usually refers to any means of transportation which has low impact on the environment (green), affordable to users and can balance the current and future needs. This work is an overview of the transportation planning studies took place during the past six decades for Baghdad. It covers the proposals of the major international consulting firms to manage the urban transportation scheme for future and improve the sustainability of the existing system. Proposal for establishment of ring roads, freeways, light train and metro tube are presented in this work. Due to the economic restrictions and security issues in the region during the past six decades, a minimal part of those proposals has been implemented. It was concluded that execution of a sustainable transport system by means of metro tube system is essential to solve the traffic congestion and environmental problems.
