Prioritization of Transit Stations to Promote as Transit-Oriented Development Using Analytic Hierarchy Process

Prashanth Shekar Lokku, CSRK Prasad

Abstract

Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) is always a tricky process for choosing the best optimal among various alternatives available. Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is one of the most widely used concepts across the globe in different disciplines among various MCDM methods. In this study, AHP is used to prioritise the new or existing transit stations for its Transit Oriented Development (TOD) implication. TOD is known as multi faced planning concept which assures development with respect to social, environmental, economical etc. In this line, AHP uses several variables which represent TOD and ensure its TODness. The first step is to rank the TODs in Hyderabad metropolitan area, India. Second is to achieve weightages among chosen variables like population density, employment density, lane kilometre, junction density, proportion of transportation area and mix land use index. In the third step, final ranking is achieved by multiplying the seven-level categorization of variables with weightages of each. Finally, these results have been compared with the traditional scoring method and results show that more than 70% in top 20 TOD list have matched. This study also concludes the importance of the prioritization in developing countries where TOD does not exist and in nature the corridors where densely occupied by lopsided activities. The study would also help planning authorities or decision makers to achieve development in terms of sustainability in right direction.
