Finite Element Approach for Sheet Metal Forming and Springback: A Review

Akshay P. Thakare, P. T. Borlepwar

Abstract

The process by which the sheet metal blank is plastically deformed into a 3D shape by the application of external force without much change in thickness is the sheet metal forming process. The paper describes the mechanism of the sheet metal forming process. Numerical simulation of the metal forming processes has now gained the industrial importance, and it has made it possible to simulate the metal deformation and to calculate stress and strain states for complex processes. By using the FEA method, simulation of design can help to predict errors and modifications can be made at an early stage before the tooling is fabricated and tested. The paper describes the use of Finite element analysis (FEA) which is a simulation technique which evaluates the behavior of components, equipments and structures for various types of loading conditions. With the help of FEA software, springback effect is also computed. Springback is elastic recovery of sheet metal during unloading which cannot be neglected but can be minimized with help of FEA software.
