The quality of weld joint depends on many input process parameters however, this research paper focuses only on the optimization of input process parameters like welding current, electrode diameter and plate thickness; and analyses the effect of these process parameters on the butt- weld joint strength by using Taguchi technique. In our experimental work, welding currents of 150,180,210 Amp; electrode wire diameter of 0.80, 1.2, 1.6 mm and base metal plate thickness of 8, 10, 12 mm are considered. Optimization of these process parameters helps us to find the maximum ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the weld joint. Study of the welding characteristics is done by using L9 orthogonal array, signal to noise (S/N) ratio and analysis of variance. This research work helps us to find welding process parameters from which we can obtain the maximum ultimate tensile strength of butt weld joint of AISI –SAE 1060 material.
