A Review on Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Design Optimization

Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers are extensively used throughout the process industry. The design optimization of S&T Heat Exchanger involves the consideration of many interacting design parameters which can be summarized as Process fluid allocation to shell side or tube side, setting pressure drop design limitation, setting velocity limits, fouling coefficients, selection of type of heat exchanger, layout as per TEMA and number of passes. Different Tube parameters like size, total number of tubes and its layout, pitch, material of construction, thickness and thermal length. Tubesheet design parameters like tubesheet type, thickness, materials and size, Shell parameters- size, material, thickness, baffle cut, baffle spacing, expansion bellows, Nozzle design-size, thickness, material.
The Introduction part of this paper gives overview of construction basics, fluid allocation and other important parameters. The literature review of this paper will provide the different approaches on design optimization which enable authors to provide design optimization scope to the designer for further analysis the effects of the many interacting design parameters to achieve the optimum design of S&T Heat Exchanger. This paper helps designer to practice the design optimization.
